17 months

My sweet baby Benjamin is 17 months old today.  This past month he has grown leaps and bounds.  He barely fits on the changing table and can reach way too far on the table and counter top.

His pants from last year aren't as small as I thought they would be (it helps that everything started out too big).  Most are too short, but two pair are still wearable, as long as he has disposable diapers on.  We can do 18mth pants until we put on cloth diapers, and then we get bumped up to 24mnth.  Shirts we wear anywhere from long 18-24 - 3 T.  I think he fits best in 2T, but sometimes I buy 3T because I don't want to grow out of it anytime soon.  I bought a couple 4 T the other day at the consignment store...I can't pass up good deals. Oh, and his feet are big.  I didn't think so for a very long time, but they are wide, and a little long, and overall - big.  however I don't think they look super ducky.

Benjamin is also super verbal...not understandable, but verbal non-the-less.  He gets pretty quiet around peers, but around momma and daddy, and sometimes other adults he doesn't stop jabbering.  Our clear words are still limited to: Ball, Uh-oh, and animal noises (which he has a TON of!).  I am convinced that he also says, "whats that?" when he points to pictures in books.  Its debatable.  He talks enough with his eyebrows I guess to make up for his lack of vocab.

I'm doing cloth diapers over half the time.  He sleeps in disposables, and anytime that I leave him with Joel, or we go out.  He eats pretty much anything.  Veggies go down much better if they are fresh, and if they are offered before any other food is seen.  But if Benjamin had his way, carbs and desserts would be his sole diet.  Pizza, corn on the cob, chicken or cheese tortillas, and oatmeal are some of our other favorites.

Bedtimes are typically going great.  There is the occasional exception when we're sick, or in a foreign place...but those occasions are getting better...not flawless, but better.  Benjamin lets us know that he's tired, more often than not, by finding our couch pillows and laying his head down.  He sleeps about 2 + hrs in the afternoon (1 - 3), and 11 hrs at night (8-7).

We still spend a lot of our day reading, being tickled, wrestling Daddy, unloading moms dishwasher - clean or  not, being frustrated that he cant tell me what he wants, running from the living room to the kitchen, driving our bus from aunt Anna?, dancing, eating, making ourselves dizzy, or building with legos.  His creations keep getting more and more creative!  Ive been saving these stacking blocks (that Benjamin got from Aunt Auburn for his birthday) in the closet so that on a day that we're super bored with our toys we have an exciting surprise.  I think he's going to love it!

Mondays: Benjamin gets stuck in his room most the morning to allow for a Nav Staff Mtg in the living room.  He generally reads books for a while, plays, sometimes takes a nap, and last week, momma brought in his DVD player which was a special treat!  the mtgs last 2.5 hrs, so we get creative.  From 4-6 we hang out with Daddy while momma has cheer practice and we don't have a very regular Monday night routine right now: football, small group, mommas girl night, etc

Tuesday: Benjamin and Momma just started going to an event called Wee Worship.  Its just a half hour in the a.m. and is great to interact with kids and sing, dance and hear bible verses.  Daddy watches Benjamin during the rest of the day, while Momma cuts hair.  Then we switch and Momma and Benjamin hang out in the evening while Daddy has a couple bible studies on campus.  Sometimes momma has college girls over after Benjamin's bed time.

Wednesday:  Every other Wednesday is Nanna day.  On the off weeks, Momma and Benjamin are going to try to make it to Caffeine and Chaos in the church gym.  Wednesday night is family night.  This is momma's favorite day/night of the week.

Thursday:  Thursday a.m. is currently our only completely free morning.  Momma's trying to keep it that way. Usually it involves groceries.  Benjamin loves "helping" by holding items Momma picks off the shelf.  I end up spending at least 15 minutes of the trip bending down to pick stuff off the floor, but its not so bad.  We make treats for Nav Nite in the afternoon, and Daddy is gone all night with college students.  Thursday is the day we sometimes have some college students come over in the afternoon, or sometimes have play dates come over in the morning, but usually we're just trying to keep our heads on straight!

Friday:  This is another day without a real schedule.  A lot of times Momma and Daddy go to a baby dr. apt - and they like to get a sitter and treat it kinda like a date - not always, but sometimes.  Usually the rest of the day is spent getting ready for the weekends events: Nav stuff, mens and womens events, traveling, etc.  And sometimes we just get a movie at night and sit on the couch!

Saturday and Sunday:  These days are also both unpredictable.  There is always something going on on Saturday, and Church and Upwards Cheerleading/Vikings Football on Sunday.  Daddy has Leadership team on Sunday night and then we start the week all over again!

And that is a sneak peak in the the wonderful 17 month old life of Mr. Benjamin.  I love him so much more than I knew possible, and can't wait to see what exciting stage of life is next!

This post is dedicated to my Happy Thursday.  It started when I looked on-line and saw that a shipment of clothes that I had ordered had arrived at 5:30 a.m. in Ames.  I knew it was only hours before the package would be in my hands.  This made me so very excited and terrified at the same time.  I went out on a limb and ordered a pair of yoga pants, and a few shirts that weren't maternity.  Maternity stuff doesn't really fit me that well, and I get stuff, convince myself I'll wear it, and then watch it hang in my closet because it looks so bad on, that I can't bear to take it off the hanger.  Then there are my normal clothes that don't fit me either.  Its a depressing turn of events...that happens most days...I put something on, and walk out to the mirror, turn around and repeat the process about 4 times.  Only to stop because I'm late to be somewhere, or a crying little boy lures me out - never because I actually am happy about my choice.  Well, not any more my friends.  I ordered Gap SM TALL.  I have fallen in love.  Pants still make me want to cry, but when my shirts are long enough, I can forgive the lower half of my body for stinking at looking o.k. in clothes.  So for all you long torso, or frustrated pregnant people out there...dry your tears! We can be happy in an isle other than socks and belts and shoes!  speaking of shoes...

my husband got me some for my birthday, and now, I have cute comfy shoes, and comfy long clothes to keep me happy all fall/winter long.

shallow?  I don't think so...I prefer to think of myself as efficient..I have better things to do than try on clothes all morning, and better things to think about all day than being uncomfortable in my boxy mid drifts.
yay! for not having buyers remorse for the first time in a long time!

happy fall everyone! & happy shopping!

Baby growing inside and out

HAPPY FRIDAY!
As of today, I am 30 weeks and 3 days pregnant.  Also I am 4 days short of having a 17 month old little boy.

Sorry for the pause, I just had to process the above information! :)  First off lets talk about...
 Miss Littler
  • heart rate in the 140s...
  • measuring right at 30 weeks...didn't gain weight at this check up (not that momma isn't eating lots!)
  • she is either very strong or very bony.
  • she wiggles CONSTANTLY.
  • if I wake up anytime after 4a.m. or 5a.m., she has caused me to be unable to go back to sleep.  boo.
  • she has also made me so tired that after running around our small upstairs, and only minimally challenging Benjamin, I could fall asleep in a matter of seconds anywhere, and anytime after 8.
  • she started to let me like coffee...I wish she hadn't.
  • FACT: her momma ate bigger amounts of less healthy food and got HUGE this past week...
  • PREFERABLE FICTION: she grew a lot and is making me look big :)
  • she kicks hardest when I'm holding her big brother...I think she's "spirited"
  • her momma has decided that she should make a grand appearance Friday, November the 19th...I know its 11 days early, but students leave and Daddy has a little more flexible schedule that next week and it would be great timing! either that or the 28th.  Its only two days early and then all my loves would have the same Birthday # (two November 28s and April 28th)
  • Braxton Hicks are here and don't seem to be leaving anytime soon...

And on to my first Little Lewicki...
Benjamin Edward
  • he loves telling stories (very long stories)
  • he loves attention
  • he still loves being tickled
  • he RUNS to the window if he hears a bus, motorcycle, or anything interesting
  • He loves running back and forth and back and forth from the living room to the kitchen
  • he thinks he's sooo funny when he closes his eyes to ignore you or just walk around or anything!
  • he has went from favoring his lion, to his kitty (from Aunt Heidi)
  • he's started to build some pretty interesting looking creations with his legos
  • his legs turn into noodles when I ask him to do something he doesn't want to
  • his whiny voice is VERY annoying
  • he's noticing more when i'm distracted and not paying attention to him...hence the whiny voice
  • he is SO cuddly and although he has some favorite people to hug, he'll give a little Benjamin love to most people
  • he has NO CLUE that a baby is coming, and that he'll have to share mom and dad...we're curious to see how this goes!
In a week and a half I'm going to stay overnight with some ladies from our church and Benjamin is going to spend the night with just Daddy.  (This will be my first time away over night!)  Then the next week, I believe I'm doing hair for a wedding, and going to be away from Benjamin a second weekend in a row!

I know I give Benjamin a ridiculous amt of attention and have thought about doing some things to get him used to playing by himself, to make the transition easier when lil sister comes.  But after about a day of having that game plan, I switched strategies after thinking about how it will never be just the two of us (three of us) again, so we might as well enjoy it!  So here's to 9.5 more weeks of the three of us...As much as I'm enjoying it, I can't wait to meet his sister!

This week IPTV took the job of babysitting whenever Momma wanted to do...anything.  Benjamin has had a cold for a week now, and although I'm a stickler about T.V. time, I relied on it heavily this week.  FYI:  I hate Clifford...I haven't turned it off yet, but I'm about to outlaw it.  That and Martha speaks (I've only seen that once)  They can be sooo snotty!

I couldn't get any good still shots, and my standards of a good picture kept getting lowered.

This morning Benjamin was quiet in the kitchen  and it appeared he was innocently playing by the fridge.  It was quiet too long, and I asked him to come in the Living Room.  I was consistently peeking at him, but somehow he managed to find his own breakfast...Chocolate Chip Cookies on the counter...He's getting too tall!

Things I love about my little man...

Things I love about Mr. Benjamin...

  • How he dances every time the ipad commercial is on T.V.
  • How he dances when pretty much any song is on
  • His itsy bitsy spider, with a very low sun
  • The way he pats my back when I pat his
  • When I sing to him before bed, and he interrupts me constantly to give kisses
  • How he becomes my tail (holding on to my pants) when I'm talking on the phone, or doing anything besides talking to him
  • Seeing how excited he gets to wrestle with his Daddy
  • When he gives me kisses on the other side of the window
  • His highstep
  • When he sings or reads to himself when he doesn't know that I'm watching
  • Listening to him play before or after he sleeps
  • The face he gives when you spray him with water
  • When he closes his eyes to pretend he can't hear me
  • How he LOVES to be tickled
  • How funny he thinks it is to make himself too dizzy to walk by twirling round and round
  • His post sleep hugs...those might be the best :)

out and about

These first pictures are from this past weekend.  Daddy went on a retreat all weekend with some student leaders so we attempted to get back on a sleep schedule after being slightly under the weather.  We weren't very successful, and had a lot of weird naps, and even some bad dreams/night terrors.  Saturday night Benjamin cried (cry is much too mild of a term) for about 35 minutes and after NOTHING calmed him down, he just suddenly stopped and walked to the book shelf and grabbed his current favorite book - The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  I don't know if he was technically having a "night terror"  He seemed very distant, and not very responsive, except a few breaks to drink large amounts of milk...followed by screaming.  Also when I asked him to do "round-a-bit" (a game Grandma Sue taught him) he would draw circles on my hand while wailing.  I don't know what for sure has been going on but I think he's getting overly tired...we'll see if we can get over this hump!

Here is our daddy-less weekend trip to the library.

Here are some photos of our first tailgate of the year...It was too chilly and a little misty, so I'm not proud that I had him outside.  My guilt got the best of me, and I left after 45 minutes...but it was enough time to have a pretty good time.  Our set up had a very secluded are so Benjamin got to wander around quite a bit.  He was on cloud 9!

It has been a rainy summer, and I'm kinda of getting immune to it.  The other day I knew it looked like rain out, but I wanted so badly to go on a walk, I decided to ignore the clouds and take off on a short journey.  I was confident we could make it from our house to Hyland, and back.  Well, we made it to Hyland, but as we crossed the street to turn around it began to down pour.  It was ridiculous...Benjamin thought it was great fun, and after this drenched pregnant woman and her 1 year old puddle jumped home, I realized we lost our brand new flip flop.  $3.50 was not worth looking for it!  Thankfully Benjamin was a good sport!

cloth booties!

http://www.cottonbabies.com/images/econobum/Econobum-Trim-Colors.jpg

Last winter I started thinking about cloth diapers, and finally took the plunge in February (I think) buying some Econobum diapers: 3 covers + 12 prefolds for $39.95...with a $15 rebate (parenting magazine code)
TOTAL $24.95

Benjamin developed a rash from the diapers and after trying three different weeks, special detergent, ect,  I gave up.  For some reason however, I told my sister that I would love to get diapers for Benjamin's birthday in April, and she got me one diaper and insert from Fuzzi buns and one Happy Heiny set.  I just kept using Tide like all my other laundry, and just used one diaper a day, and he wasn't getting rashes...I started mixing in my Econobums with the "wrong" detergent, and still no rashes! So all summer, I have used cloth on and off, with no problems and hopefully, some savings!

Well, the more we stay home, the more convenient cloth diapers are, and the more I like savings $.  With a new little miss on the way, I'm hoping to use cloth 75% of the time with her, vs the 25% of probably used it with Benjamin.  My sister asked me some questions about holiday gifts, and got me on the diaper search again...(we tend to bounce our "obsessions" back and forth...whether its Arbonne, Aveda, cloth diapers ect).

I started my search with one goal...to find affordable velcro diapers.  Well, a long story short, I went from thinking: Bumgenius sale to Gdiapers with a discount code to ending up coming back to Econobums...

Yes, I know, Econobums aren't velcro...but this is when I thought...duh! you can buy velcro at a fabric store and make your own!

So this is what I ended up buying today:

1 x
Econobum: Trial Pack
1 Diaper Cover
3 Prefolds

  - Trim Color: Ribbit

$11.95

1 x
Econobum: Trial Pack
1 Diaper Cover

  - Trim Color: White

$11.95

1 x
SECONDS: bumGenius 3.0 One-Size Cloth Diapers
GRASSHOPPER

  - Agree to Terms: Yes

$12.00

3 x
SECONDS: Econobum

  - Agree to Terms: Yes

$14.85

Sub-Total:$50.75
Discount Coupons:BESTDEAL:-$2.54

Total:$48.21

So after my two seperate purchases and gift from my sister I have
11 covers, 18 prefolds, 3 inserts, and have only spent $73.16

So Benjamin and I are off to Joanns today to see how the heck I'm making my diapers meet the velcro qualification of the whole project!

wish us luck!
